Creating a Press Release

Getting press coverage for your event greatly increases the impact of your effort. Anyone can contact the press and the more often you contact them, the more likely the chance they'll take an interest.

1. FIND YOUR LOCAL PRESS

  • Google "closest news stations"

Most have a contact for press releases, advisories or breaking news. Can’t find a contact? Email any department at the station and ask.

  • Google the names of your local newspapers as well as more major papers

Go for broke and contact the big players – New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Examiner, Post-Millennial, the New York Post…

2. CONTACT THE PRESS EARLY

  • Call at least 3-days before your event, unless they are known to be friendly on this issue.

  • Prepare your press release as soon as your event is planned so it's ready to go.

3. BE PREPARED

  • Have a knowledgeable and calm spokesperson assigned to speak to the press.

  • Have your talking points ready

    • Why are you there?

    • Who is your group? Individuals can be anonymous.

  • Be polite and your best self. Use appropriate language to honor detransitioners/desisters. This day is all about them.
